You can just about see me 'swimming' in the sea. It was 'orrible'! Knew it wasn't going to be like a swimming pool swim but really freaked me out. It was also a lot deeper than I had presumed. Couldn't see the bottom at all. It was murky, green and rough. Its usually like a lake on Pilot Bay side and usually clear but there were swells and tiny tiny waves! Twas not an enjoyable experience. Only lasted out there for about 15 mins. I'm hoping that when I am surrounded by other swimmers and there is the goal of reaching the buoys and completing the laps it will be different and I won't be as freaked. I didn't hyperventilate (like I've read some people do first time) but it was close. I have been working on my stroke for ages and got it really smooth and refined and then I get in the sea and automatically revert back to the old slow style of months ago. The swim on Sunday is 1500m (60 lengths of swimming pool) which I can do easily in the pool in about half hour BUT I am now very worried about doing that distance in the sea. Spose just got to get through it!  Posted by Picasa

Mike, you're very brave! I don't even like going for a paddle in the sea, especially with all the unknown creatures hanging round the bottom. Just the thought of standing on something freaks me out. But....I'm sure that once you're out there with all the other competitors, your survival instincts will kick in, and you'll just want to win!!! (But I think the waves might be bigger, with all the mad splashing around!)

Sounds like you've really got into NZ life though. We've JUST bought our first house in OZ and boy, do we feel better! I absolutely HATED renting, especially as we had to hide our 2 cats all the time (one of our stipulations in our rental agreement, was NO PETS - I made my husband sign the lease!!!!)
Oh, just become familiar with Oz nature - got bite by a white-tail spider last week! Thigh swelled up to 20cm circle! Luxury of living in Australia!!

Take care & good luck for next week & keep up the good work

Great to hear from you!

Glad you're more settled and enjoying life in Oz. Sounds bad about the spider. I kill spiders on sight out here (which I get told off by Laura) just in case!

I'm gonna update the blog with the triathlon pictures (hopefully) tonight.

Keep in touch

Mike
